Christine Ohlman, lead vocals on the band for Saturday Night Live, known as "The Beehive Queen" spread the soul of her music through the thousands of her fans, growing to love her in voice, talent and performance. And with Christine being a native of Bronx, New York, she was born to Rock n’ Roll with a lot of Soul. In her late teens, Christine's “Wake Me, Shake Me”, first release - was the top 100 in singles.  Christine recorded 6 albums, which includes “The Deep End”.  She feels strongly when she stated to Venture Out! Magazine Online once; “I love my fans. Their support means everything to me. What I do in the Music Industry is for them.”  Christine’s 2010 release of The Deep End with Rebel Montez is:

Christine Ohlman – vocals, acoustic and electric guitar
Cliff Goodwin - vocals, lead guitar
Michael Colbath – bass, vocals
Larry Donahue – drums, percussion

Christine Ohlman is still the current and long time vocalist, with the Saturday Night Live Band, who sang in their 25th anniversary telecast, Bob Dylan’s 30th Anniversary bash at The Garden with George Harrison and Chrissie Hynde. Christine, the queen of blue-eyed rock n’ soul , also made her special appearance at the 2009 Obama Inaugural Gala in Washington, DC, The Lincoln Center “American Songbook” series with Sting and Lou Reed.

That’s not all - Christine Ohlman’s performances with many others in the music industry, draws her fans to her like a magnet. Christine will tell her audience, “I’ve come here to set your souls on fire”.

With Christine’s Saturday Night Live “Swine Fever”, Raves for Re-Hive, interviews with the New York Times, The Beehive Queen also Rocked Elmore Magazine and Rolling Stone as well along with several other publications in reviews.

Members of Rebel Montez are the most valuable people to her as for her in the release of “The Deep End”. Along with Christine’s long standing history in Rock n’ Roll, she is deep in Soul with the members of Rebel Montez.

CD Cover - THE DEEP END

Cliff Goodwin: The legendary New England Rock n’ Roll gods The American Standard Band. Joe Cocker and Robert Palmer called Cliff to be their lead guitarist because of his legendary reputable signature in performance. The music industry fames Cliff; he not only shares the stage, Cliff rocks the House.
Cliff Goodwin - Larry Donahue - Michael Colbath

Michael Colbath: The Jazz at the base of his own rhythm. Known as “Buddha of the Bass”, his stage presence goes deep. With Michael’s fingers at the bass, his performance with Duck Dunn, James Jamierson and John Paul Jones brought his rhythm to high inspirations. He delivers the inspiration in music at its original context.

Larry Donahue: The beat and percussion with unshakable timing. A world of inspiration, at LA’s turbulent music scene, Larry has the elegant Stax styling of Al Jackson, Jr. to Wamack’s “Scratchy” and Frank Kirkland’s jungle-drum excursions with Bo Diddley. With Donahue’s Motto “Have Drums, Will Grove”, he is born again every time he picks up those sticks.

THE DEEP END HMG RECORDS HMG 2009 - Fourteen songs of life and love tempered by loss from the Beehive Queen of blue-eyed rock n' soul, in a style Rolling Stone's Dave Marsh calls "Contemporary Rock R&B."

Co-produced by Andy York (John Mellencamp) with Rebel Montez: Cliff Goodwin (guitars); Michael Colbath (bass), and Larry Donahue (drums). Featured are duets with Dion, Ian Hunter, and Marshall Crenshaw, plus guest appearances by Levon Helm, G.E. Smith, Big Al Anderson, Eric "Roscoe" Ambel, Shawn Pelton, Paul Ossola, Catherine Russell, the Asbury Juke Horns w/ Mark Rivera, Mitch Chakour, Jeff Kazee, and Vic Steffens.

Get Your Healin' Special Re-Release! - Featuring Dr John, Funky Meters, BB King, Irma Thomas, Allen Toussaint, Guardians of the Flame, Blu Lu Barker & more!

"Artist of a lifetime - Christine Ohlman remains in the constant spotlight center of music. Getting to Know Nashville Singer-Songwriter Callaghan Smerek

By: Phil Cartwright

Fifteen year old Callaghan Smerek showed her first musical sign as a newborn, imitating the sound of the car beeper. On pitch. She started writing songs when she was 8. The first one was called Fractured Fairytale. She eventually found a piano teacher named Greg who taught her to dig deep and tap the music in her soul. Realizing that it was too heavy to carry a piano on her back, she strapped on a guitar one day. Callaghan really started to rock. She asked for a microphone for her birthday and began to sing. Her musical worlds began to collide creating a unique, passionate, young artist. Practice takes up a lot of time. So does writing her own songs. Every night, before the lights go out, poetry pours from her heart. Callaghan has a voice that touches people. She was born to fill the world with music.

First of all, she points out, the “g” in her name is silent! Her favorite colors are purple & yellow and she loves sparkles!! The INCREDIBLE Anita Baker is my godmother. She thinks baby pigs are the cutest things ever! No matter what color nail polish she wears, it’s almost always sparkly. She tells us that she could talk before she could hold my head up.

She’s serious about her career. She’s a member of the Screen Actors Guild (SAG) and a member of the Nashville Songwriter’s AssociationInternational (NSAI). We’re pretty sure that if you locked her in a room with a guitar for a day, she’d probably walk out with 50 new songs. When you ask her for her favorite song, she goes on for days because - can never come up with ONE.

What else. If she could, she’d have a grand piano, a studio, a keyboard, a stage, and a closet of guitars in my room. She’d turn her piano into a bed at night!!! ”Music is the best thing that ever happened to me. Every night before I go to sleep, I pray for world peace. I think Kelly Clarkson, Teddy Geiger, Joss Stone OneRepublic, Beyoncé, and Led Zeppelin are phenomenal … and she thinks (and I think we pretty much agree with her) The Beatles is the most amazing band to ever walk the earth. Well, guess what her plan is…with a big smile she tells us… “I wanna be a rock star!” Be sure to visit Callaghan's page at http://www.myspace.com/CALLAGHANSMEREK

Here's Callaghan’s vid “Do You Believe in Magic”!

In Business: Real Estate Expert, Debbie Battista, Tells Real Estate Home Sellers The Key Steps to Get a Home Ready to Sell - Turning The "For Sale" to SOLD!

By: Debbie Battista

Happy New Year from The Home of Domus Realtors & Associates to Your Homes!

If you are going to sell your home in the next year, here are some things to consider.

De-Clutter, store and purge your belongings. When people look in your basement and in your closets it will be more organized and less overwhelming. Remove all the family photos and children’s artwork. Make it easy for the potential buyer to imagine his or her belongings in your space.

Give your Home a fresh coat of paint (use neutral colors) and clean all your switch plates. It makes the buyer feel like it is clean and new. Who wants to buy someone else’s dirt?

Pay attention to the “curb appeal”. If it looks rundown and dirty from the curb, most people will assume the interior is also rundown and dirty. Think about a new welcome mat, painting your front door, polishing the brass, adding a planter to the front porch. Clean all garbage from the property and trim back any overgrown bushes and trees. Keep the lawn cut. If you have a pool, keep it clean and in good condition.

Clean up after pets. During showings have them visit a neighbor or take them for a ride .Put away all of your pets toys, bowls, beds etc. Not every buyer likes animals. Clean and Shampoo rugs. Don’t smoke in the house many buyers are turned off by the smell of smoke.

Repair any water issues. Water in the basement, leaking roof, toilet, clogged gutters, etc. Water can do so much damage, it is cheaper to solve the original source then have to replace ceilings, walls, or flooring.

Consider staging, or making some simple changes to make your home look more desirable. For example; if your dining room is small, take the extra leaves out of the table, add a throw pillow, open all the window shades, and curtains, turn on lights and make sure the home does not have an unpleasant odor. Hint; don’t overdo it with air fresheners, or candles. Some people are sensitive to perfumes and they might think you are attempting (to hard) to mask something.

Pay to have your home appraised just before listing it. The value might be more or less then you think. Get a professional to tell you (an appraiser not an agent). You will also have the appraisal to use as a tool if a potential buyer questions the value. List it for the correct price first. Otherwise, you run the risk of letting your home appear as a “stale” or stigmatized property.

Make repairs before you market your home. It almost always costs you more if they need to be negotiated at a later point. Have your home inspected for pests and treat if need be. Many banks will not give a mortgage to a potential buyer without proof of this.

Shop for your Realtor. They represent you and your interests. You want to be sure that they are a good “fit” for your needs. Are they a part time or full time agent? What fees does the Brokerage charge? Are they negotiable? What kind of advertising can you expect? Does the agent go to all showings or leave a lock box on the property? Will they do an open House? How often? How much of the commission (what is the split) will be shared with the agent of the buyer? Remember they work for YOU! What kind of feedback will you get, is this someone who you are on “the same page” with? If you are not happy with them, how do you cancel your contract? What is the length of the contract? Your Realtor can make all the difference in the world. They help negotiate, deal with inspection issues, share information with appraisers, attorneys, inspectors, and agents, and communicate between all of the parties on your behalf. They do so many “Behind the scene” things. Studies have shown that selling with a Realtor, will fetch you a better price, than selling it on your own (often paying for more than the commission rate that you are charged)! You wouldn’t try to fix your own teeth, so trust the professional Realtor. Realtors have relationships with other agents, inspectors, appraisers, lenders and owners…all of these things may be an exceptional asset to you in the sale of your property. They also have the benefit of experience…they might have solutions to problems that you cannot imagine. Not to mention the fact that if they don’t’ get the job done, they do not get paid…They are just as motivated as you.

Don’t have a “secret sale”. You must allow the Realtor to put up a “For Sale” sign. Have your agent provide you with a copy of the marketing materials, The virtual tour and any other photos, as well as your Residential Property Disclosures (remember it is the LAW to be honest and list any issues the property might have).Share them with your email list or post on your Facebook and Craig’s list. that your home is for sale. Allow technology help you sell. Ask your agent about SMS or Texting property details to potential buyers. Have your Agent provide your listing with a Bar Code. Many phone applications can read it and if someone drives by, and wants more information, the bar code can provide them with those details.

Hire a Real Estate attorney. They will not only protect you, but they often help you avoid mistakes that can come back to haunt you at a later date. They are worth every penny. Communicate with him/her during the entire process.

Start Packing, it is never too early to pack, organize, clean, sort, tag sale, donate and purge. For more information contact us at www.domusrealtors.com

Keith Richards's “Life” Narrated by HorizonVU Music Friend Joe Hurley

By: Phil Cartwright

There can be no question that Keith Richards is amongst the most colorful (colourful?) rockers of all time (certainly topping our list of rock’n'roll survivors). His book, Life, is out on 20 CDs. Our good friend Joe Hurley joins actor Johnny Depp in voicing what the Guardian calls ” the vicarious thrill of voyeurism within the framework of a cautionary or salutary tale.”
From Amazon.com:
As lead guitarist of the Rolling Stones, Keith Richards created the riffs, the lyrics, and the songs that roused the world. A true and towering original, he has always walked his own path, spoken his mind, and done things his own way.
Now at last Richards pauses to tell his story in the most anticipated autobiography in decades. And what a story! Listening obsessively to Chuck Berry and Muddy Waters records in a coldwater flat with Mick Jagger and Brian Jones, building a sound and a band out of music they loved. Finding fame and success as a bad-boy band, only to find themselves challenged by
Johnny Depp
Johnny Depp
authorities everywhere. Dropping his guitar’s sixth string to create a new sound that allowed him to create immortal riffs like those in “Honky Tonk Woman” and “Jumpin’ Jack Flash.” Falling in love with Anita Pallenberg, Brian Jones’s girlfriend. Arrested and imprisoned for drug possession. Tax exile in France and recording Exile on Main Street. Ever-increasing fame, isolation, and addiction making life an ever faster frenzy. Through it all, Richards remained devoted tothe music of the band, until even that was challenged by Mick Jagger’s attempt at a solo career, leading to a decade of conflicts and ultimately the biggest reunion tour in history.
Joe Hurley
Joe Hurley
In a voice that is uniquely and unmistakably him–part growl, part laugh–Keith Richards brings us the truest rock-and-roll life of our times, unfettered and fearless and true. Richards’ rich voice introduces the audiobook edition of LIFE and leads us into Johnny Depp’s performance, while fellow artist Joe Hurley bridges the long road traveled before Richards closes with the final chapter of this incredible 23-hour production, which includes a bonus PDF of photos.

Lisa Hannah and “Brand New Sun”: Nashville Singer-Songwriter with a Pop-Vibe Sound

By: Phil Cartwright

As good luck would have it, we’ve been in contact with Nashville-based Lisa Hannah. Her new CD ”Brand New Sun” brings us eight tracks all written or co-written by Lisa. The CD was produced by Paul Nielsen along with local luminaries Paul Taylor and Chip Martin, who share the guitar and keyboard credits. A stellar lineup of musicians also contributed to the project, including Tony Morra and Derek Mixon (drums), Glen Snow (bass), Mark T. Jordan (keys) and Jon Conley (slide guitar). Here at HorizonVU Music, we really like what Lisa has done on this album – she does have a pop-vibe sound with diversity spanning across the title track, “Brand New Sun” through to the folk-style "Home”.

Lisa grew up in a small Tennessee town, just outside of Nashville. She was first exposed to country music and the Grand Ole Opry, but her musical interests quickly expanded to other genres, such as hard rock, pop rock, alternative, progressive, and new wave. “My mother was a rocker! You would never know it by looking at her, as she was a mild mannered, sweet southern lady. She love-love-loved The Beatles, The Doors, Aerosmith, Nirvana, and Pearl Jam. We would go to concerts together and run over each other trying to touch Eddie Vedder!”

Lisa sang in church choirs and college musicals, and eventually she started fronting cover bands. She had always been writing songs, but she didn’t take it seriously. Having a successful career in medical sales, she moved to New Jersey (just outside of New York City) to take a corporate position in marketing. But soon, Lisa longed to be back home. “While I loved the music scene and excitement of Manhattan, I missed the beauty of Tennessee and the music community in Nashville.” Lisa moved back to Nashville after a year-long stint in New Jersey.

Lisa was an only child and had a very close relationship with her mother Donna. “We were like two children growing up together, since we were closer in age than the typical mother-daughter scenario.” It was shortly after Lisa moved back to Tennessee that Donna was diagnosed with ovarian cancer. Lisa moved in with her Mom to take care of her. “It was during those months of taking care of my Mom, as I watched her struggle for life, that I realized that each day, each moment, and every breath is precious. She inspired me to take my music more seriously.”

Lisa’s debut CD “Brand New Sun” is the latest testimony to her decision to engage her artistic side. The project is dedicated to her mother. “She was such an inspiration to appreciate every moment, every person, and everything in this beautiful life. That even in despair and pain, there is beauty and love, which sustains us all.”

Donna passed away the day before Lisa’s birthday in 2004. “I wanted to have this CD completed by the anniversary of her passing, which this year was the day before Thanksgiving. Miraculously, that happened – a miracle.

“Writing and recording this record has been such an emotional journey, but I had the help of many musically talented Angels and friends to help me through. It’s been very therapeutic. Music allows you to express emotions you can’t express in any other way.”

Stephanie Griffin - Folk/Folk Rock Artist with Talent, Head on Shoulders and Energy to Deliver

By: Phil Cartwright

Well, once again, I’m loose on the Blog. Recently, I had the good fortune to be introduced Stephanie Griffin. She’s an eighteen year old musician singer/songwriter from the U.S. (Connecticut). A student at Quinnipiac University pursuing a major in Communications & Media Studies and minor in music, she’s been playing piano since she was eight and guitar since since was thirteen. She started writing songs at the age of twelve.

It’s clear that her true passion is music and a music industry career. Over and above Stephanie’s talent as folk, folk-rock artist, she’s sends of the off the kind of electricity you like to feel from young artists with talent, head on shoulders and energy to deliver.

Hi Stephanie! Thanks for taking time out to talk with us. We’ve given you a bit of an introduction. Is there anything I missed?

SG: No problem, Phil. I think you picked up on the main points. I am orginally from Hamden, Connecticut. I moved to Wallingford, Connecticut [about twenty minutes away] when I was ten. I seem to have always had an interest for music since I could talk. I remember singing all the time and even dancing to Motown music around my house. Whenever my teachers from elementary school would ask what I wanted to be when I grew up, I always responded with the clever response: a singer. Yet, once I started songwriting, I thought I would like to song-write as a career as well.

From Motown to acoustic - that’s a journey! Tell us a bit about your musical development. Formal training, your current view toward your development and what you really would like to do in music.

SG: The only real formal training I had with voice was through middle school and high school in my chorus classes. I regret not being able tohave formal lessons with my voice, yet, I’ve learned many important skills singing through school. For example, I have learned the importance of diaphragmatic breathing, pronunciation, and singing in a higher voice. When it came to guitar, I took lessons over a summer learning the basics of a guitar, like how to hold it, strum, finger-pick, etc. As for the future, I would like to go into the music industry as a music journalist or find a career in radio or music production. I would like to song-write as a career as well.

Tell us about your major influences…where did your interest in music start and what made you Stephanie?

SG: My first major influence when it came to my passion for music was my mother. I remember her always playing the piano, guitar, and singingto me. In a way, she was a big inspiration for my musical traits. Other influences include Taylor Swift, Hayley Williams, Christina Aguilera, and Mariah Carey. All of whom have unique voices and styles that I have tried to incorporate into my own musical style.

We’ve all had our good days and bad days in the music business…putting the tough days aside, what do you consider to be the high point along your career path?

SG: The best moment in my musical path so far has been picking up the guitar and starting to write music. Whenever I’m going through something in my life, I could most likely get a song out of it. Song writing has been my way to express myself and my emotions. I know it will be something I don’t give up as a musician.

You have performed many songs…your favorite? Which video do you consider to be your best so far – the one you most want our readers to hear and see.

SG: I have performed many covers and originally pieces. My favorites include anything by Taylor Swift or Sugarland. I suggest the readers to check out my YouTube page:http://www.youtube.com/stephii17xo to view videos from when I was at least fifteen to now. The video I recorded recently is just a rough recording of my original song “Erased”. The song is about a break up, where one person pretty much erases every memory of the other person. Towards the end of the song, the other person pretty much redeems themselves and learns to be okay after the separation. “Erased” is also one of my favorite original songs to date.

Very cool! Let’s take a time out to watch the video…”Erased”

Great! thanks for sharing your work work with us. Before we let you go, I want to back up and “return to the future”. We covered off on your interests in being a singer/songwriter, but we know you azre culivating other interests as well such as being in the industry in the industry as a music journalist or even finding a career in radio or music production. Sum it all up for us. What’s ahead for Stephanie?

SG: My dream has always been to perform. Yet, being realistic, I believe I can find as much success being behind the scenes of future music. I’m very interested in working in the music and focusing on production and songwriting. In the career of music journalism, I could also focus on promoting future musicians and writing about them. I am confident though that my major and minor will prepare me well enough for a career in the music industry. I always want to keep music in my life and want to follow a career that I will enjoy every day.

Stephanie Griffin, thank you again. We wish you the best of luck going forward and hope you’ll keep us in mind here at HorizonVU Music!!!
