Since October of 2010 - our readers of Venture Out Magazine Online responded in our poll to choose "The Reader's Choice of Top Recording Artists of the 21st Century". This is an honorable movement, especially when the Top Choice and Most Votes for 2010's Venture Out! is Christine Ohlman with top listener's reviews of the 2010 release of Christine Ohlman and Rebel Montez - "The Deep End"

Christine Ohlman, lead vocals on the band for Saturday Night Live, known as "The Beehive Queen" spread the soul of her music through the thousands of her fans, growing to love her in voice, talent and performance. And with Christine being a native of Bronx, New York, she was born to Rock n’ Roll with a lot of Soul. In her late teens, Christine's “Wake Me, Shake Me”, first release - was the top 100 in singles. Christine recorded 6 albums, which includes “The Deep End”. She feels strongly when she stated to Venture Out! Magazine Online once; “I love my fans. Their support means everything to me. What I do in the Music Industry is for them.” Christine’s 2010 release of The Deep End with Rebel Montez is:

Christine Ohlman – vocals, acoustic and electric guitar
Cliff Goodwin - vocals, lead guitar
Michael Colbath – bass, vocals
Larry Donahue – drums, percussion
Christine Ohlman is still the current and long time vocalist, with the Saturday Night Live Band, who sang in their 25th anniversary telecast, Bob Dylan’s 30th Anniversary bash at The Garden with George Harrison and Chrissie Hynde. Christine, the queen of blue-eyed rock n’ soul , also made her special appearance at the 2009 Obama Inaugural Gala in Washington, DC, The Lincoln Center “American Songbook” series with Sting and Lou Reed.
That’s not all - Christine Ohlman’s performances with many others in the music industry, draws her fans to her like a magnet. Christine will tell her audience, “I’ve come here to set your souls on fire”.
With Christine’s Saturday Night Live “Swine Fever”, Raves for Re-Hive, interviews with the New York Times, The Beehive Queen also Rocked Elmore Magazine and Rolling Stone as well along with several other publications in reviews.
Members of Rebel Montez are the most valuable people to her as for her in the release of “The Deep End”. Along with Christine’s long standing history in Rock n’ Roll, she is deep in Soul with the members of Rebel Montez.
Christine Ohlman & Rebel Montez CD Cover - THE DEEP END
Cliff Goodwin: The legendary New England Rock n’ Roll gods The American Standard Band. Joe Cocker and Robert Palmer called Cliff to be their lead guitarist because of his legendary reputable signature in performance. The music industry fames Cliff; he not only shares the stage, Cliff rocks the House.
Cliff Goodwin - Larry Donahue - Michael Colbath Photo By: Ric Kallaher
Michael Colbath: The Jazz at the base of his own rhythm. Known as “Buddha of the Bass”, his stage presence goes deep. With Michael’s fingers at the bass, his performance with Duck Dunn, James Jamierson and John Paul Jones brought his rhythm to high inspirations. He delivers the inspiration in music at its original context.
Larry Donahue: The beat and percussion with unshakable timing. A world of inspiration, at LA’s turbulent music scene, Larry has the elegant Stax styling of Al Jackson, Jr. to Wamack’s “Scratchy” and Frank Kirkland’s jungle-drum excursions with Bo Diddley. With Donahue’s Motto “Have Drums, Will Grove”, he is born again every time he picks up those sticks.
THE DEEP END HMG RECORDS HMG 2009 - Fourteen songs of life and love tempered by loss from the Beehive Queen of blue-eyed rock n' soul, in a style Rolling Stone's Dave Marsh calls "Contemporary Rock R&B."
Co-produced by Andy York (John Mellencamp) with Rebel Montez: Cliff Goodwin (guitars); Michael Colbath (bass), and Larry Donahue (drums). Featured are duets with Dion, Ian Hunter, and Marshall Crenshaw, plus guest appearances by Levon Helm, G.E. Smith, Big Al Anderson, Eric "Roscoe" Ambel, Shawn Pelton, Paul Ossola, Catherine Russell, the Asbury Juke Horns w/ Mark Rivera, Mitch Chakour, Jeff Kazee, and Vic Steffens.

Amazon.com - Christine has a wide presence on Amazon.com. Individual links for each CD are below, following the CD's description.
The Hard Way - (HMG 1175) Originally released in 1995 on Deluge Records, Christine's first recorded outing with Rebel Montez laid down the Beehive gauntlet with classics like "A Shot Of You," "Then God Created Woman," "Sugar Melts," and "The Seventh Sons." The title track got some major movie action in 2008's "Sex & Lies In Sin City" starring Matthew Modine and Mina Suvari. "The first thing you notice is her tough, rousing, sexy voice"--Charles M. Young/Playboy
Radio Queen- (HMG 1178) This 1997 live outing, originally released on J-Bird Records, was captured during a raging blizzard and in front of an equally raging audience. Here's where you'll find the only recorded version of "Not Fade Away," a staple of any Rebel Montez show, and early live versions of "Turn" and "When The Summer Goes," later to appear on Wicked Time. "Live is where Christine and her group make their living, and it's where they really stand out. And I mean they stand out the way her white beehive 'do does."--Fran Fried, New Haven Register
Wicked Time- (HMG 1176) 2000 saw the release of brand-new tunes on J-Bird Records, with favorites "Ring Of Flame," "When I Work My Thing On You," "Turn," that good-love-gone-bad anthem that continues to tear it up on live dates, a barn-burning cover of Ike & Tina Turner's "I Idolize You," and the goin'-to-New-Orleans title cut. "'When I Work My Thang' is Johnny Otis singing a swamp theme to a movie Burt Reynolds wished he'd made" --Andrew Loog Oldham
Strip- (HMG 1177) The Beehive Queen returned with a vengence in 2003 on TNA Records with a more swamped-up sound, evident on lovelorn nuggets "Another Country," "Empty," "The Storm," the sexy bossa-nova title track, and and an incendiary version of "Highway 61." Strip was the swan-song legacy of Rebel Montez guitarist Eric Fletcher, "The Blond God," who would pass away in 2006. "Husky voiced tough gals seldom get any more fiery than Christine Ohlman. Like a female Bruce Springsteen or Southside Johnny, she uses her encyclopedic knowledge of soul, blues and swaggering leader-of-the-pack 60s girl group pop to texture her mini-dramas that exude a distinct urban sensibility." --Hal Horowitz, The All-Music Guide
And don't forget Re-Hive, the 2008 career retrospective (HMG 1189), featuring choice cuts from each of the above. Cliff Goodwin comes on board on guitar, big-time, for brand-new Chicago blues classic covers "Killing Floor" and "Dimples." Re-Hive includes seven alternate takes (including a live version of "Then God Created Woman") and previously-unissued versions of the Percy Sledge soul classic "It Tears Me Up" and eighties-era dance floor raver "Charmaine." Available at all outlets above.

Our first full-production video from Christine Ohlman & Rebel Montez's latest, The Deep End, was a joy from start to finish. When we shot the main footage in late July with Bill Hurley of ADC Film Production in front of a blue screen at Connecticut's Horizon Music Group, we'd already hatched a scheme to raid Bill's extensive collection of vintage horror movie footage to enhance the theme of the vid's title, "Love Make You Do Stupid Things." A second shoot at the legendary Lakeside Lounge in New York City with the track's special guest, the guitar-totin' Eric "Roscoe" Ambel of the Del Lords, yielded some fun stuff as Roscoe and I romped in the Lakeside's equally legendary photo booth and swapped stories at the bar. The triple-tremelo-guitar attack of Rebel Montez's Cliff Goodwin, Deep End producer Andy York (who's on tour now with John Mellencamp), and the aforementioned Mr. Ambel is potent stuff, with bassist Mike Colbath and drummer Larry Donahue laying down their usual murderous groove. It was big fun, and we hope you dig the result. Check it out at www.youtube.com/christineohlman, and let us know what you think! Rock on, everybody!
Thoughts of Christine Ohlman, "The Beehive Queen," whose sixth CD is "The Deep End" in a genre SIRIUS/XM's Dave Marsh calls "Contemporary Rock R n'B" and whose soulful vocals grace the stage at Saturday Night Live, where she is the vocalist with the SNL Band, as well as Grammy-nominated CDs. Blog is updated regularly in association with her web site www.christineohlman.net. Rebel Montez members are Cliff Goodwin (guitar); Larry Donahue (Drums); and Michael Colbath (bass).
The Magic of a Wish Leads to a Successful Goal for Wishes on Wheels 2010!
By: Maggie Griffin
On September 19th, 2010 - 468 Trucks convoying down Interstate 84 in Connecticut lead by Connecticut State Police and the Connecticut Motor Vehicle Commercial Division, with drivers driving with pride knowing they drove to make the Magic of a Wish come true to benefit the Connecticut Make a Wish Foundation.
Several trucking industries took part in this convoy. To add, Gil Simmons, Meteorologist from News Channel 8 drove the weather van in the convoy.
Following the Special Make a Wish Trucks, of which one of them had celebrity Christine Ohlman who we know as the Beehive Queen from Saturday Night Live’s Band. However, on that day, September 19th, was not just the 11th annual Wishes on Wheels where President Keith Herzig and Vice President Roland Bolduc celebrated a successful goal with the committee that meets once a month year round to plan each year’s event; the smiles on over 200 Make a Wish Families that were there brought the meaning of the Magic of this event. Several people from several communities across Connecticut attended and many lined up along the interstate to watch the convoy.
Prior to the convoy taking off, Kaitlynn Hatch , who sings the National Anthem for the event yearly, joined her beautiful voice with Christine Ohlman when singing the National Anthem. Following Herzig said “We have one more important announcement.” Ohlman takes the microphone and shouts out “Ladies and Gentleman – start your engines!” Christine Ohlman felt the Magic when she said “what a great event!! Thank you so much for involving me in the cause!”
Keith Herzig quotes “A Successful Event is Our Goal”. Herzig took pride in happiness when receiving the certificate of appreciation on behalf of The Wishes on Wheels Committee, a plaque thanking Wishes on Wheels from Kevin Sinclair, Chairman of The Board of Directors for Connecticut Make a Wish, presented to Herzig from Miss. Connecticut Brittany Decker.
What is the Magic of a Wish? It is wishes coming true for children with life threatening illnesses. One example that touches my heart is when Sinde Candella whose grandson has Duchenne Muscular Dystrophy quoted an example when she told me “My grandson got a puppy Beagle from New Jersey from Make-a-Wish. We had a limo take us out to N.J. to pick Tee up! Short for T-Rex. A day I will never forget!”
This year’s theme was Country-Western. With farm animals there, horses, Animal Ed from Animal Adventures, Star Wars characters and “Thrasher” crushing those cars along with much more to do, the day was brightened with the smiles of everyone.
This year with about $70,000 raised from this year’s Wishes on Wheels to Benefit Connecticut’s Make a Wish Foundation, FedEx Ground handed a $10,000 donation to Mike Burke who is the CEO of Make a Wish.
When Keith Herzig said 11 years ago he wanted to make a difference for Make a Wish from his family to the Make a Wish Families, with Roland Bolduc by his side and the committee of Wishes on Wheels, they became the Fountain of Inspiration for thousands of families in Connecticut and beyond.
Fellow Stringbenders and Soul Music Fans From Far and Wide…..This last week was such a cool one, for so many reasons, that I wanted to share a few memories.
I’d long been invited to come to Muscle Shoals to sit in with The Decoys (legends in their own right, and Donnie Fritts’s touring band) at their regular Wednesday night hang at a roadhouse outside of town. One thing led to another and months went by. Finally, I decided to just book a flight and do it. Kelvin Holly, the Decoys’ monumental guitarist who’s been with Little Richard for many years, was the king mixer of the week’s festivities, and my dear soul sister Kim Stovall planned everything. You all know I collect soul music on vinyl and have for years. Going to the Shoals (this would be my second trip) is like going to church for me.
During my two-day stay, I toured FAME and the former Muscle Shoals Sound (now renamed Cypress Moon and largely a film studio, nestled beautifully on the Tennesee River; that’s me sitting on the couch in front of the wall covered by moss green shag carpeting in the main office); sat in the FAME control room and met with Rick Hall; met my friend Jerry Phillips, Sam’s son, whose 100,000 watt radio station Q-107 is beaming “Love Make You Do Stupid Things” from The Deep End all over the South; saw the set for Jerry’s cool new podcast “Muscle Shoals To Music Row” (www.ms2mr.com ); had coffee with celebrated photographer and local bon vivant Dick Cooper (many of the best Shoals music photos are Dick’s); lunched with cool chicks Suzanne Bolton (who manages everything at FAME for Rick) and my soul sister and tour guide Kim Stovall; had a quick photo taken outside 3614 Jackson Highway (because no one likes the present owner, we had to sneak around); and toured through the Alabama Music Hall of
Fame, where I learned that Nat “King” Cole had two other music-playing brothers (I’d thought there was only one) and saw Webb Pierce’s gold-plated cadillac with ornamental guns mounted on the hood.
All this was a prelude to the gig at Sidelines II, a local watering hole out on Ford Road (”It’s a joint,” Kelvin had said, and he was right.) Spooner Oldham ended up missing in action (he didn’t get out of church in time), but showing up to play were Donnie Fritts, a bunch of cats from Little Richard’s band, and Travis Wammack. I knew The Decoys were good, but they turned out to be more than that. Mike Dillon rules the drum kit and sings his ass off, while Kelvin, Steve Vickery (sitting in for David Hood, who apologized personally for having to go to London and do Jools Holland’s show) NC Thurman and Barry Billings similarly rule their corners of the stage. This was American music at its best, played with heart and soul and grit, for the pure joy of it. Everyone could sing, and sing well. They told me after I got there that there had never (not for any special reason–there just had never) been a woman in the “sitting in” spot with the Decoys, so I was honored, to begin with. But the welcome I got will stay with me for the rest of my life. We did Erma Franklin’s version of “Piece Of My Heart,” romped through Freddy King’s “I’m Tore Down” (after Donnie Fritts and I decided Freddy is, indeed, the best King) and, when, after a swamped-up turn through “Take Me To The River,” Mike Dillon announced, “She’s a Decoy!”, my heart was pretty full.
Donnie got up to sing “We Had It All,” and I joined him on the bridge. Then The Decoys burned through the Fritts/Penn/Oldham anthem ”Memphis Women and Chicken.” The crowd was whooping, dancing, drinking, sweating and smiling (with Dick Cooper snapping what turned out to be 400 photos of the evening) by the time Travis Wammack quietly took the stage with his signature red 335—and just as quietly blew my mind. His 1964 hit “Scratchy” wasn’t (and didn’t need to be) on the bill: he was there to be part of the band. They played a couple, he shredded—and I mean SHREDDED—and then announced, “I’d like to sing a little…” as he sounded the arpeggio that introduces ”When Something Is Wrong With My Baby.” This was perfect, pristine country soul, sung so true, deeper than any well, and I was proud to stand up there and be part of the gospel choir that the bunch of us made (remember I said they can all sing…) at the chorus. THEN Wammack ripped into the most ass-kickin’, hip-shakin’ version of the Isley Brother’s “It’s Your Thing” that the world has ever known. I danced all over the stage, Mike Dillon and I aced the harmonies, and the Beehive Queen’s soul was very, very, very, very content. So many folks came over to the table to thank me. It was I who felt grateful, and I still do, and I always will. What a beautiful thing, to be there with everyone, so DOWN in the groove, all night long. My thanks and respect to Kim, Kelvin, and all involved.
Before I left, very early on Thursday morning, I visited Jimmy Oliver’s morning show on Q107 Eric Ambel, Cliff Goodwin & Andy York’s triple-tremlo-guitar attack on “Love Make You Do Stupid Things” sounded mightly fine beaming out over those megawatts. And, by the way, the cotton opened up overnight, between Tuesday and Wednesday. The drive south back to Birmingham on Route 157 was through a sea of white.

THE DEEP END HMG RECORDS (HMG 2009) Fourteen songs of life and love tempered by loss from the Beehive Queen of blue-eyed rock n' soul, in a style SIRIUS/XM's Dave Marsh calls "Contemporary Rock R&B." Co-produced by Andy York (John Mellencamp) with Rebel Montez: Cliff Goodwin (guitars-Joe Cocker/Robert Palmer); Michael Colbath (bass), and Larry Donahue (drums). Featured are duets with Dion, Ian Hunter, and Marshall Crenshaw, plus guest appearances by Levon Helm, G.E. Smith, Big Al Anderson, Eric "Roscoe" Ambel, Paul Ossola, Catherine Russell, Shawn Pelton, the Asbury Juke Horns w/ Mark Rivera, Mitch Chakour, Jeff Kazee, and Vic Steffens.
It is Ohlman's first CD of new work since 2004's "Strip"; her recording hiatus followed the deaths of both longtime mate and producer Doc Cavalier and Rebel Montez guitarist/founding member Eric Fletcher (a pristine radio air shot of Ohlman with Fletcher is one of the CD's bonus cuts).
The critics rave..... "There are so many 'wow' moments"- Dave Marsh, SIRIUS/XM Radio personality / Rolling Stone editor emeritus "Whatever she touches becomes soulful and passionate. Ohlman always sounds like her born-to-be-bad self, belting out songs like the spitfire she is. It's that swagger combined with tenderness that makes her so compelling...the perfect balance of raw soul and gutsy rock. Perhaps the most powerful and potent moment is the title track, a gospel-infused swamp ballad that seems autobiographical, especially when she sings that she's 'hard to handle, the excitable kind/take off runnin' when I could've walked.' Ohlman never flinches from the hard stuff and throughout The Deep End, she dives in like the classic soul kings and queens she idolizes." - Hal Horowitz, The All Music Guide
"Ohlman and Rebel Montez concoct a Soul atmosphere as thick and palpable as a humid Southern night. Ohlman’s voice is a dusky, supple thing of dark Soul beauty, like a gene splice of Dusty Springfield and Delbert McClinton. She sells the album’s handful of covers with aching authenticity, from her duets with Marshall Crenshaw on the Marvin Gaye/Mary Wells classic “What’s the Matter with You Baby” and with the incomparable Dion on “Cry Baby Cry.” But the standouts on The Deep End are Ohlman’s stunning originals, which blister and soothe in equal measure."- Brian Baker, Cincinnati CityBeat
"The husky-voiced singer is a full-package talent, a dynamic rocker who draws on soul and blues in ways that give her music a classic feel even as it pulses with her own personality. Make no mistake: If Ian Hunter, Dion DiMucci, Marshall Crenshaw, Levon Helm, G.E. Smith, Big Al Anderson, and Eric Ambel draw you into The Deep End, it's Ohlman who ends up making the biggest impression. As in: 'Wow'." - Nick Cristiano, Philadelphia Inquirer (syndicated)
"As a singer, Ohlman makes each song sound like a prime cut on a jukebox in a Memphis barbecue joint. Hit(s) the sweet spot, straight and true." --Vintage Guitar Magazine
"Expect this album to pepper a few best-of lists in December. The songs on The Deep End draw as much upon gospel and urban doo-wop as they do blues and Americana. “I surrender to the rhythm in my blood”, Ohlman sings in 'Like Honey'. Me too, Christine, me too.” –Bill Holmes, www.popmatters.com
“Christine Ohlman and her band Rebel Montez have just released their sixth studio album, The Deep End, to what will undoubtedly be rave critical acclaim. Let it begin here. It’s staggering!" - Reb Landers, www.thealternateroot.com
"The record, like any good bit of love, has layers: not so much warning as honest admission - or perhaps understanding - of love's varied means and ends. In fact, the blues isn't always about being sad, but simply allowing room for the myriad reaches and complexities of emotion." --Kim Ruehl, NoDepression.com
"Don’t let the beehive hair or glammed-up persona fool you. Christine Ohlman can deliver the goods. With a delivery that carries all the joy of early rock and roll, Ohlman owns the voice of choice for every style from edgy blues to tender R&B to sweet country to bittersweet singer-songwriter". - Blues Revue - June/July 2010
"There's a wondrous familiarity and traditionalism in Christine Ohlman's old-school, rough-hewn, Southern-soul roots rock..(she) is loyal and true to her roots while setting herself audacious new challenges: deeply impressive." - Chris Arnott, The Advocate, New Haven, CT
"On her latest record, seasoned R&B chanteuse Christine Ohlman writes and sings about human interactions, from irresistible sex to true love and, ultimately, unbelievable loss. There’s never a doubt that Ohlman is singing from an experienced heart." - Kay Cordtz, Elmore Magazine
“[Ohlman] sings in a gutsy rock ‘n’ roll voice edged in soul and blues, part Bonnie Raitt and part Genya Raven, with an element of Van Morrison’s early wildness. Her throwback sound combines the romanticism of Brill Building pop and horn-fed Stax muscle (courtesy of the Asbury Jukes’ Chris Anderson and Neal Pawley) into a potent rock ‘n’ roll stew. Ohlman’s band is similarly road-tested (the bass of Michael Colbath is particularly notable).” - www.hyperbolium.com
"If you give "The Deep End" a spin, you'll be an Ohlman fan for life. (4 stars)" - The Daily News, McKeesport, PA (Pittsburgh Metro)
"The “Beehive Queen” is a hard rocking Memphis soul fueled dynamo, and The Deep End may be her finest album yet...absolutely beautiful." - Michael Buffalo Smith, Gritz Magazine
“In its original form, rock n' roll was a blend of blues, country and gospel. Christine Ohlman practices rock the old-fashioned way. Like the music she makes, Ohlman seems timeless.” – Eric Danton, The Courant /Hartford, CT
"'Cry Baby Cry' (a duet with Dion) ought to be blasting out of a '55 Chevy radio on a hot summer night" – Wayne Blesdoe, Knoxville News-Sentinel
“I do have a favorite, however, and it’s another example of the cache that Christine Ohlman carries within the music world… enlisting the services of rock legend Dion DiMucci to sing with Ohlman on the gospel-tinged ‘Cry Baby Cry’ is a great touch.” – Reb Landers, www.thealternateroot.com
"A perfect concoction of musicianship and road weary soaked vocals....making the disc a solid listen is the wonderful group of musicians, Rebel Montez, who really add an exceptional backing groove to these 15 tracks and gives it an A-plus sheen. The Deep End is a diamond in the rough." - Carl Cortez, iF Magazine
"Ohlman exudes rock and soul authenticity from her wailing vocals to her beehive hairdo..a confident, cool and street-savy diva." – M Music and Musicians (successor to Performing Songwriter)
"The Beehive Queen has never sounded better"- Andrew Loog Oldham, Producer, The Rolling Stones / SIRIUS/XM Radio personality

"STRIP" REVIEWED IN THE ALL-MUSIC GUIDE... "Like a female Bruce Springsteen or Southside Johnny, she uses her encyclopedic knowledge of soul, blues and swagggering leader-of-the-pack 60s girl group pop to texture her mini-dramas that exude a distinct urban sensibiity. Ohlman's originals dominate the album, shimmering in a backstreet glaze of moody, drizzle-drenched shadows..." - Hal Horowitz

Re-Hive includes seven alternate takes (including a live version of "Then God Created Woman") and previously-unissued versions of the Percy Sledge soul classic "It Tears Me Up" and eighties-era dance floor raver "Charmaine."

QUEEN OF HEART AND SOUL by Christine Ohlman ELMORE Magazine Jan/Feb. 2009 / cover story excerpt: "When Aretha Franklin sprang, full-throated, out of obscurity at age 14, sitting down at the piano in her father’s Detroit church and banging out “Yield Not To Temptation,” caught for posterity on a reel-to-reel tape recorder, she was years away from Soul Queen status. She’d still have to run the gauntlet through a stint in New York City on Columbia Records, where she’d record off-the-mark songs like “Rock-a-Bye Your Baby With a Dixie Melody” for Mitch Miller. That deal eventually went south and so, wisely, did Franklin, landing in Muscle Shoals, Alabama in 1967 with producer Jerry Wexler and the cream of the FAME (Florence Alabama Music Enterprises) studio band behind her..."
