In this time of Book of Revelation-like world events, Paris got a real breath of fresh air last week with the arrival and performance of Lauren Brombert.
has command of a broad range of music. She can really rock with a band - her new album “Closer than Skin” on Teresa Records proves the point. Her solo acoustic performance really shined. She started the evening with “Make It Last” and ended with “Just A Lie”. Songs such as “Like An Angel” that rock hard on the CD work beautifully when done on her own. And she can really cross over moving into the country sound with “Say Goodbye” (also on “Closer Than Skin”).
Classical music was the soundtrack of Lauren’s upbringing. Born in New Haven, CT, as thedaughter of a Parisian and a New Yorker, she was raised on two continents. Though her father was an opera singer and her mother a classical pianist, it was the Beatles’ “Dizzy Miss Lizzy” that ignited the musical passion of a five-year-old. After studying classical piano for eight years, she switched to guitar.
In a garage outside of Paris when she was fourteen, Lauren sat in as a singer for the French band, Duty Free, and was hooked. But instead of pursuing music, she wound up taking a long academic detour. After a B.A. in Classics at Haverford College, an M.A. in Russian Studies at Yale University, more graduate work in linguistics, and a couple of teaching jobs, she was about to start a career abroad as a field linguist and realized it was a now-or-never proposition. She settled in Chicago and finally abandoned herself to songwriting.
Adopting the moniker Urban Nomad, Lauren started performing and recording with her band. A few years later, she began a collaboration with guitarist/arranger David Chelimsky and recorded an acoustic EP produced by guitarist extraordinaire, Fareed Haque. Their acoustic duo eventually attracted renowned Chicago bassist Bob Lizik (Brian Wilson) and drummer Ed Breckenfeld (the Insiders, CathyRichardson Band). Together they recorded “From These Stones” (Tessera Records), which received critical acclaim and was chosen by “The Performing Songwriter” as a Top 12 DIY.
Lauren moved to Denver in 2003 with three songs for a new album having already been produced by Bob Lizik and engineer Jon Smith. With new Denver band mates Greg Blankenship on bass and David Harms on drums, the rest of the album was finally recorded by Brian and Greg McRae (Wrecking Room, Coupe Studios) and released in early 2008.
The good news is that Lauren will be back sooner than later and we’ll be waiting!!!

Phil Cartwright began his journey in and entertainment dates since the 1970’s. His foundation in non-commercial educational radio in Chicago is where he launched his career, beginning as an engineer then moved forward as a political news writer and talk show host. “My first music programming was for a jazz program (avant – garde) – Davis, Coltrane, Monk. From jazz I moved into pop rock and folk” said Cartwright.
When Phil moved to Texas, he continued in radio, getting a heavy dose of country from recording artists such as Charlie Pride, Willie Nelson, Waylon Jennings, Johnny Cash and Reba McEntire. After completing his Ph.D in economics, he gripped both moved academics and music in Athens, Georgia. Phil taught at UGA, where he became regular at the famed “40 Watt Club”.
For several years, people consulted Phil in the industries of specialized consumer products, entertainment and technology and marketing strategy work. In 2009, with the consulting business in somewhat of a difficult period following the Enron scandal, he made his return to the entertainment business.
However, his exposure to “big labels” lead him discouraged by the fact that, first and foremost, the mainstream industry seemed possessed fighting a losing battle against technology. Owing to economic austerity, the days of finding emerging artists and helping them to grow came to a standstill. But the mission in Phil continues through admirations that inspire him most. “I always had great admiration for Sam Phillips and the spirit of Sun Records. Another has always been Bill Graham. More recently, my friend, Paul McGuiness has been a source of inspiration” Cartwright emphasized.
Phil Cartwright and HorizonVU Music, the key to introducing emerging music artists, of which also gains them a boost in recognition. The power of the Internet and social media expanded more of that reach to music lovers and recording artists - resulting in a more powerful tool for the artists that go through Phil Cartwright’s expertise and strong background for artists’ exposure, management, tech sounding recognition and more.

When asking Phil the reward he feels in this business, he answered – “I suppose the brightest side of the business has been meeting some great people and (hopefully) lending a hand in career development. The tough side has been that relative success in the music business takes a lot of support from an active following – from blog contributions to going live –and, yes, money to invest. It’s been difficult times for the world economy, the entertainment business and HorizonVU Music. Never-the-less, our spirit remains strong and we stick to our mission. There can be no question that Keith Richards is amongst the most colorful (colourful?) rockers of all time (certainly topping our list of rock’n'roll survivors). His book, Life, is out on 20 CDs. Our good friend Joe Hurley joins actor Johnny Depp in voicing what the Guardian calls ” the vicarious thrill of voyeurism within the framework of a cautionary or salutary tale.”
From Amazon.com:
As lead guitarist of the Rolling Stones, Keith Richards created the riffs, the lyrics, and the songs that roused the world. A true and towering original, he has always walked his own path, spoken his mind, and done things his own way.
Now at last Richards pauses to tell his story in the most anticipated autobiography in decades. And what a story! Listening obsessively to Chuck Berry and Muddy Waters records in a coldwater flat with Mick Jagger and Brian Jones, building a sound and a band out of music they loved. Finding fame and success as a bad-boy band, only to find themselves challenged by
Johnny Depp
authorities everywhere. Dropping his guitar’s sixth string to create a new sound that allowed him to create immortal riffs like those in “Honky Tonk Woman” and “Jumpin’ Jack Flash.” Falling in love with Anita Pallenberg, Brian Jones’s girlfriend. Arrested and imprisoned for drug possession. Tax exile in France and recording Exile on Main Street. Ever-increasing fame, isolation, and addiction making life an ever faster frenzy. Through it all, Richards remained devoted tothe music of the band, until even that was challenged by Mick Jagger’s attempt at a solo career, leading to a decade of conflicts and ultimately the biggest reunion tour in history.
Joe Hurley
In a voice that is uniquely and unmistakably him–part growl, part laugh–Keith Richards brings us the truest rock-and-roll life of our times, unfettered and fearless and true. Richards’ rich voice introduces the audiobook edition of LIFE and leads us into Johnny Depp’s performance, while fellow artist Joe Hurley bridges the long road traveled before Richards closes with the final chapter of this incredible 23-hour production, which includes a bonus PDF of photos.

The Hard Way - (HMG 1175) Originally released in 1995 on Deluge Records, Christine's first recorded outing with Rebel Montez laid down the Beehive gauntlet with classics like "A Shot Of You," "Then God Created Woman," "Sugar Melts," and "The Seventh Sons." The title track got some major movie action in 2008's "Sex & Lies In Sin City" starring Matthew Modine and Mina Suvari. "The first thing you notice is her tough, rousing, sexy voice"--Charles M. Young/Playboy
Radio Queen- (HMG 1178) This 1997 live outing, originally released on J-Bird Records, was captured during a raging blizzard and in front of an equally raging audience. Here's where you'll find the only recorded version of "Not Fade Away," a staple of any Rebel Montez show, and early live versions of "Turn" and "When The Summer Goes," later to appear on Wicked Time. "Live is where Christine and her group make their living, and it's where they really stand out. And I mean they stand out the way her white beehive 'do does."--Fran Fried, New Haven Register
Wicked Time- (HMG 1176) 2000 saw the release of brand-new tunes on J-Bird Records, with favorites "Ring Of Flame," "When I Work My Thing On You," "Turn," that good-love-gone-bad anthem that continues to tear it up on live dates, a barn-burning cover of Ike & Tina Turner's "I Idolize You," and the goin'-to-New-Orleans title cut. "'When I Work My Thang' is Johnny Otis singing a swamp theme to a movie Burt Reynolds wished he'd made" --Andrew Loog Oldham
Strip- (HMG 1177) The Beehive Queen returned with a vengence in 2003 on TNA Records with a more swamped-up sound, evident on lovelorn nuggets "Another Country," "Empty," "The Storm," the sexy bossa-nova title track, and and an incendiary version of "Highway 61." Strip was the swan-song legacy of Rebel Montez guitarist Eric Fletcher, "The Blond God," who would pass away in 2006. "Husky voiced tough gals seldom get any more fiery than Christine Ohlman. Like a female Bruce Springsteen or Southside Johnny, she uses her encyclopedic knowledge of soul, blues and swaggering leader-of-the-pack 60s girl group pop to texture her mini-dramas that exude a distinct urban sensibility." --Hal Horowitz, The All-Music Guide
And don't forget Re-Hive, the 2008 career retrospective (HMG 1189), featuring choice cuts from each of the above. Cliff Goodwin comes on board on guitar, big-time, for brand-new Chicago blues classic covers "Killing Floor" and "Dimples." Re-Hive includes seven alternate takes (including a live version of "Then God Created Woman") and previously-unissued versions of the Percy Sledge soul classic "It Tears Me Up" and eighties-era dance floor raver "Charmaine." Available at all outlets above.

In today’s Country Music world, you need to be able to run the gamut from a stylistic point of view. California-bred Corinne Chapman definitely has that talent, as evidenced on this mini album. The six tracks all offer something a little bit different from the previous track, and that is something you don’t hear of much these days.
On the opening cut, “Mine,” she takes somewhat of an outlaw country stance, sounding a little bit like Miranda Lambert. It’s a sound that works well for her, but she doesn’t stay there. Instead, she them moves into the romantic side, scoring with the sensual “Be Good To Me,” which is a good fit for her voice.
She strikes a California sound on the Deana Carter-ish “Alone,” which benefits from having one of the most deadly choruses I have heard in some time. If promoted properly, it should be a hit. She stays in that vein with the 60s ish philosophy of “Weeds.” She also delves into a little Bluegrass with the title cut, which despite the suggestive title, is a lot more innocent than you might think. One never knows what is going to make an impact with the listening public, but don’t be surprised if you hear a lot more out of Corinne Chapman. She’s got the total package, and deserves to be heard!

"Just Paint What Your Dad Loved” were the words of Michael Allman as we discussed the cover art for his CD “To Delaney & Bonnie From The Friends of the Poor Elijah Foundation”. The figure in the top right corner is honoring Michael Allman and his dedication to the movement of PEF and the induction of D&B and Friends into the RRHOF. Michael, with F Tom Skinner, and ”Friends of Poor Elijah” did an amazing job and the Bramlett family is so proud. You rocked it. Thank you.
Dad loved horses and he loved to ride. He loved our “Rock and Roll Ranch”. He loved being home. My Dad was a brilliant composer and loved and rocked the most soulful horn sections. He heard music in his head all the time.
The guitar is a given…I can’t even imagine Dad without his guitar close by. He loved, and was influenced by, Robert Johnson. Dad said, “He was a good friend of mine ‘long time ‘fore I was born”. He loved his front porch. Swinging and singing and sitting on his chair and playin guitar and talking and telling storiesandlooking at his rosesI painted the corner of the album “The Original Delaney & Bonnie and Friends- Accept No Substitute” to honor the Magic.
The figure in the top left corner is from an image Jaesen created. My Dad loved to fly in his dreams. This symbolism was created during the first works of the Elijah Series. It represents Dads hand and who he touched directly. Those he taught, mentored, inspired, and loved. The back cover is an image of an empty greyhound tour bus by Jaesen Kanter. Can you imagine the stories on that bus?

Fellow Stringbenders and Soul Music Fans From Far and Wide…..This last week was such a cool one, for so many reasons, that I wanted to share a few memories.
I’d long been invited to come to Muscle Shoals to sit in with The Decoys (legends in their own right, and Donnie Fritts’s touring band) at their regular Wednesday night hang at a roadhouse outside of town. One thing led to another and months went by. Finally, I decided to just book a flight and do it. Kelvin Holly, the Decoys’ monumental guitarist who’s been with Little Richard for many years, was the king mixer of the week’s festivities, and my dear soul sister Kim Stovall planned everything. You all know I collect soul music on vinyl and have for years. Going to the Shoals (this would be my second trip) is like going to church for me.
During my two-day stay, I toured FAME and the former Muscle Shoals Sound (now renamed Cypress Moon and largely a film studio, nestled beautifully on the Tennesee River; that’s me sitting on the couch in front of the wall covered by moss green shag carpeting in the main office); sat in the FAME control room and met with Rick Hall; met my friend Jerry Phillips, Sam’s son, whose 100,000 watt radio station Q-107 is beaming “Love Make You Do Stupid Things” from The Deep End all over the South; saw the set for Jerry’s cool new podcast “Muscle Shoals To Music Row” (www.ms2mr.com ); had coffee with celebrated photographer and local bon vivant Dick Cooper (many of the best Shoals music photos are Dick’s); lunched with cool chicks Suzanne Bolton (who manages everything at FAME for Rick) and my soul sister and tour guide Kim Stovall; had a quick photo taken outside 3614 Jackson Highway (because no one likes the present owner, we had to sneak around); and toured through the Alabama Music Hall of
Fame, where I learned that Nat “King” Cole had two other music-playing brothers (I’d thought there was only one) and saw Webb Pierce’s gold-plated cadillac with ornamental guns mounted on the hood.
All this was a prelude to the gig at Sidelines II, a local watering hole out on Ford Road (”It’s a joint,” Kelvin had said, and he was right.) Spooner Oldham ended up missing in action (he didn’t get out of church in time), but showing up to play were Donnie Fritts, a bunch of cats from Little Richard’s band, and Travis Wammack. I knew The Decoys were good, but they turned out to be more than that. Mike Dillon rules the drum kit and sings his ass off, while Kelvin, Steve Vickery (sitting in for David Hood, who apologized personally for having to go to London and do Jools Holland’s show) NC Thurman and Barry Billings similarly rule their corners of the stage. This was American music at its best, played with heart and soul and grit, for the pure joy of it. Everyone could sing, and sing well. They told me after I got there that there had never (not for any special reason–there just had never) been a woman in the “sitting in” spot with the Decoys, so I was honored, to begin with. But the welcome I got will stay with me for the rest of my life. We did Erma Franklin’s version of “Piece Of My Heart,” romped through Freddy King’s “I’m Tore Down” (after Donnie Fritts and I decided Freddy is, indeed, the best King) and, when, after a swamped-up turn through “Take Me To The River,” Mike Dillon announced, “She’s a Decoy!”, my heart was pretty full.
Donnie got up to sing “We Had It All,” and I joined him on the bridge. Then The Decoys burned through the Fritts/Penn/Oldham anthem ”Memphis Women and Chicken.” The crowd was whooping, dancing, drinking, sweating and smiling (with Dick Cooper snapping what turned out to be 400 photos of the evening) by the time Travis Wammack quietly took the stage with his signature red 335—and just as quietly blew my mind. His 1964 hit “Scratchy” wasn’t (and didn’t need to be) on the bill: he was there to be part of the band. They played a couple, he shredded—and I mean SHREDDED—and then announced, “I’d like to sing a little…” as he sounded the arpeggio that introduces ”When Something Is Wrong With My Baby.” This was perfect, pristine country soul, sung so true, deeper than any well, and I was proud to stand up there and be part of the gospel choir that the bunch of us made (remember I said they can all sing…) at the chorus. THEN Wammack ripped into the most ass-kickin’, hip-shakin’ version of the Isley Brother’s “It’s Your Thing” that the world has ever known. I danced all over the stage, Mike Dillon and I aced the harmonies, and the Beehive Queen’s soul was very, very, very, very content. So many folks came over to the table to thank me. It was I who felt grateful, and I still do, and I always will. What a beautiful thing, to be there with everyone, so DOWN in the groove, all night long. My thanks and respect to Kim, Kelvin, and all involved.
Before I left, very early on Thursday morning, I visited Jimmy Oliver’s morning show on Q107 Eric Ambel, Cliff Goodwin & Andy York’s triple-tremlo-guitar attack on “Love Make You Do Stupid Things” sounded mightly fine beaming out over those megawatts. And, by the way, the cotton opened up overnight, between Tuesday and Wednesday. The drive south back to Birmingham on Route 157 was through a sea of white.

It was last June that we first posted a review of Kacey Cubero’s new CD, Fill Your Cup http://www.kaceycubero.com. The self written and produced album was mixed in Nashville by the Grammy award-winning David Z (Prince, Etta James and Jonny Lang). There’s a little bit of everything: the raw rocking anthems I Want More, It’s Alright, and Reserve the Right; a bucolic Old Cadillac; the folksy Feather
in the Wind; organic, soulful ballads, What if I Really Love You and Whatcha Gonna Do; the bluesy Set You Free; the evocative steaminess of Under My Skin; the bluegrass tinge of Two Trains; the plaintive longing of Sunday Mornings; and the love letter that is the title song, Fill Your Cup. The CD hit #18 on the EURO AMERICANA CHART in August http://www.euroamericanachart.nl/0810.html.
The range and versatility of her music is evidenced by her winning the MAVRIC Independent Music Award in 2009 for Folk Song of the Year for Feather in the Wind, and for being named 2006 Artist of the Year by the Santa Barbara Blues Society—the oldest blues society in the U.S.—and representing them in the International Blues Competition in Memphis.
Now Kacey’s on her way to Europe, so note the following dates:
HorizonVU Music is proud that Kacey is a featured HorizonVU Music artist. You can find her CDs and downloads at SHOP HorizonVU Music http://blog.horizonvumusic.com/?page_id=2068
