Samantha Savage Smith from Alberta is a very talented Indie musician on rising toward her dream. With success

Samantha Savage Smith

Samantha Savage Smith

already under
her belt, she is more than well accomplished in music and has a natural ability when performing. Indie music is easily defined whether it is by the music itself or the fashion that goes along with it. An artist’s individualism is not only represented through their music, but through themselves and their sense of style. Just like music, fashion is a form of art, creativity and self-expression. It offers the opportunity to create your own style and be whoever you want to be. As shown in the pictures, one is able to observe how Samantha displays her herself and individualism through her ensemble. She has more of a softer edge. She wears an assortment of prints and textures, but also is very simple. Her style is very sweet and youthful. We can see this in her performance at EPCOR CENTRE’s TransCanada Alberta Music Series in 2010.

Many people think that with fashion and dressing really nice consists of spending a lot of money. But in reality, trying to manipulate a look can be achieved in a very adorable way. The Indie style is unique as it has the artist’s or person’s own personal touch. Not only that, but it is also hipster. Now, when you desire to achieve the “Indie Style” like Samantha, you look at pieces that are more soft and less edgy. Also, it is very easy to do on a budget! When going to purchase out clothing, one must always keep in mind that even though they are trying to achieve someone else style, they must have their own personality in it! Be positive and open minded because confidence and time are what I takes to transform into any look.

An outfit consists of many parts whether it’s the shirt one chooses to wear to the shoes they decide to goes with it. More baby doll or looseswaying tops would most definitely work for this look. For the Indie look, tanks or loose off the shoulder tops would definitely work. Flattering simple dresses fit this look as well, as they are soft and sweet. All these do not have to be just one solid colour, but could have some trendy prints. Also one thing to stress, is the shirts do not have to be skin tight to be very flattering and tasteful. These pieces can also be paired with any jean or pair of leggings. Cardigans are pieces that everyone should own-in many styles, textures, prints and colours as well. Accessories and footwear are big components to any fashion. Leather boots add edginess or casualness to an outfit depending on ones choice of style of colour. Flat shoe is also good for this look as it adds a sense of simplicity. Every one including Indie artists should have a wife range of variety of accessories. Samantha is seen wearing chunkier and bulkier jewellery, but she chooses to mix it with simpler pieces as well. Her taste in jewelry is more vintage and will add a really nice touch to an outfit. So, if you wish to achieve a very Indie and fashionable look like Samantha go for it! But remember to include your own self-expression. Be sure to have fun with it and when wearing it, strut with confidence!

Maura Kennedy is a Pop/Indie/Rock artist who is beyond talented. While keeping up a busy schedule of shows and acting gigs, she finished her

album in the autumn of 2009, “Parade of Echoes”. Indie pop is a genre of alternative rock music. Having an independent approach is fulfilling in many ways as it can be used in many aspects, not just through music, but through fashion. Maura expresses herself through her music and shares with the world what she wants to say through her lyrics. Her individualism is also portrayed through her sense of style. It is about making a statement and being whoever you want to be. It is about passion and freedom. As shown in the pictures, Maura represents her individualism and true character through her choice of attire. She is seen to always be dresses in a variety of prints and textures. Her style is very bold and unique.

The first thing that may pop in your head is where to start. Well any clothing article will work for this look! A summer dress of different styles are great because they can be worn all year round and can be worn so differently. Perhaps try a simple style or one that’s trendier with prints and texture. Shirts shirts shirts! It’s for sure all about the design. From long sleeve to short sleeve to no sleeve, find some that have an interesting look and stand out. For pants, well…here we have a variety to pick from. Skinny jeans or leggings can be worn with anything. Leggings come in many textures and colours. Sodepending on what mood or style you wish to try, pick what fits to that! Layer a dress and a jacket with leggings or perhaps just a simple top with a pair of them. Jackets play a big role in an outfit also. She is seen wearing many different styles. From Short to blazer cut to very long. They are also not your typical monochromatic colours, as they are to be in colour. Not only that, but they are also of different textures. So when you go to pick out an jacket to go with your very trendy outfit, try velvet or sued or even corduroyed material. The texture will definitely add a nice touch to the outfit. Finally, the outfit is almost complete! All you need are a nice choice of accessories and shoes. In achieving Maura’s look, accessories add that final touch. She wears much simpler jewellery such as a pearl necklace or jut a simple chain with a pendant on it. Simple costume jewellery will work the best for this look!

So if you like to stand out, then achieving this look is definitely for you! This look is all about colour, layering and a sense of difference. Her style incorporates all the favourite pieces-sometimes in one outfit! Now one may think to go about having this look will cost a fortune, when I fact it doesn’t! It can be put together in an affordable way just by going to your favourite stores and picking out pieces that you like and say something about you. The trick is how you chose to put the pieces together! Experimenting and having fun because that is what fashion is about-experimenting and putting together what you though would never work!

Rebecca’s Creations…Design and Mode for the Indie Music Scene – Chantelle Barry

Chantelle Barry is an exceptional Indie/Pop musician from Western Australia who started her career at a very young age. She was well known by

Chantelle Barry

the public when she won Popstars Australia in 2000. She is a singer and songwriter who released her album ‘Simple Things.” Through that she toured in Australia at the end of 2009, featuring a performance on Good Morning Australia. Her songwriting has allowed her to gain first place in the UK Songwriting Contest for her song “You.” Not only is she a singer, but she is an actress. She was known in many movies, some of which were: “Couples Retreat” as the Eden East Shot Girl and Veronica in the movie “Wish.” She is such a talented person in the fields of music and acting, that as she continues in this successful career path, she will reach above and beyond to the goals she has for herself. And she will do this because she embodies determination and confidence.

Being an Indie musician means to be independent and represent one’s self and being who you want to be. Along with having your own style to music, the musician’s personal choice of attire had with it the factor of their own originality. Chantelle Barry has more of a Indie beachy look to her, which can also be seen in her pictures. For many people including newer artists have their set style, but may not have the all the expenses needed. To get this “Indie Beach” look like Chantelle or any look for that matter, it is easy, as it can be done in an affordable way. Though the expenses are a vital factor in creating an image, one also needs to remember confidence. Any look needs to be worn with that and also to what makes you happy. Expression of your inner character is very important.

Now, Chantelle’s look is very simple yet fun. One thing that she does is play with colour! Now being the spring/summer season, colour up your wardrobe and don’t be afraid to stand out! An outfit consists of many parts which will turn into something very flattering. From baby doll tanks to plain or patterned tank tops, it all works. Even a simple cut shirt will do in achieving this look. Off the shoulder tops are very nice too as the way they drape allow for a nice touch. Pretty much any choice of bottom will work. A simple pencil skirt or a teared skirt are great for this look. Any colour or even with a print, they allow for the indie beachy look. A dress does also, as they are versatile and can be worn in many ways whether one likes to dress them or up or down, they are a fun piece to work with and very comfortable to wear. Skinny jeans that are white, light wash, or just a lighter colour fit this look as they too can be worn in many ways. Another piece to an outfit is a jacket. For this look, earth tone vintage leather will add a soft edge to the outfit. A jean jacket with the cuffs rolled will also make it look good. An outfit is not only about the clothing as it is very much about the choice to accessories and footwear. Vintage boots or a simple flat or sandal can be worn with what one chooses to wear. Different styles add different touches. Chantelle in some of her pictures is seen wearing more chunky accessories, like bulky bangles, some of which are different textures and colours. Belts and bags are also an important component. A belt can allow for a change in the look of an outfit, or add that extra umph it need. There are an endless amount of style when it comes to bags, just pick one you like that are complimentary to your outfit and you will see how fast your outfit look great and completed. Vintage accessories and clothing is always unique. It always gives that extra lift to your outfit.

Through that, one is able to achieve that “indie Beachy” look that Chantelle Barry possesses. When going for her image, include your own character and represent your individualism because that is what the best kind of image is-being yourself.
