Fact: In the 1968 World Series (won by Detroit over St. Louis), both Mickey Lolich AND Bob Gibson pitched three complete games APIECE. The chances of that EVER happening again are about the same as yours truly dating Christie Brinkley and Jenny McCarthy on CONSECUTIVE evenings within the next week..........TRIVIA QUESTION: The 2001 Oakland Raiders--who finished 10-6 under coach Jon Gruden--had three players on the squad who caught 70 or more passes apiece. Can you name this trio? Answer to follow..........Can you imagine if Florida businesswoman Debra Trick married hockey legend Bobby Orr, divorced, then married Bucknell swimmer/scholar-athlete Christian Treat? Halloween aficionados would surely delight in her full married name of Debra Trick Orr Treat..........It's truly sad to see all the empty seats at the Yale Bowl during the Bulldogs' home games this season. Through their first 4 games played in New Haven, Yale has averaged about 10,000 fans per game and actually drew LESS than 6,000 for the very first game of 2012--vs. Colgate. In a way, it's puzzling due to the continued affordability to attend a game, the historic nature of the facility itself, and the overall attraction of simply viewing a football game there from a scenic standpoint. Then again, it's a sign of the times: "big-time" college football taking precedence with less college football fans wanting to see TRUE "student athletes" clash on the gridiron. Of course, the empty seats get magnified, too, due to the renovated Bowl still having a seating capacity of more than 60,000..........ITEM: Deltona (FL) Little League president George Anthon is arrested on suspicion of stealing thousands of dollars from the organization; he allegedly used the league's debit card inappropriately--spending a good deal of the money at a ski resort in North Carolina. Yes, folks, the cash was to be used to buy new baseball equipment for kids and also fix up various playing fields that needed repairing. I know--how LOW can one go, right? I'm convinced that this guy's conscience is located at the same location as the body of Jimmy Hoffa..........Just thinkin': If A-ROID had aged half as well as actress Demi Moore, the Yankees are hoisting up championship trophy #28 right about now..........Answer to trivia question: TIM BROWN (91), JERRY RICE (83), and CHARLIE GARNER (72)..........Happy birthday wishes go out to former NFL linebacker Corey Miller--who recently blew out 44 candles. Drafted by the Giants in the sixth-round of the 1991 draft, Miller played seven seasons for New York between 1991 and 1997 before finishing his career in '99 with Minnesota. Miller played in 110 games (starting 73 of them)--making 215 tackles while intercepting seven passes along the way. Following his playing days, Miller has worked in sports radio in his home state of South Carolina. Best wishes for many more birthdays to come, Corey..........Finally, condolences go out to the family of former major league player/coach Eddie Yost--who passed away recently in Massachusetts at the age of 86. A native of Brooklyn, NY, Yost played 18 seasons in the "bigs" between 1944 and 1962 for the Senators, Tigers, and Angels--appearing in more than 2,000 games. Even though he hit a modest .254 lifetime, Yost led the American League in walks SIX times and on-base percentage twice; his ability to gather bases on balls earned him the nickname "The Walking Man" during his playing career. After his days on the diamond were finished, Yost coached more than two decades for the Senators, Red Sox, and Mets; he was the third base coach for the "Miracle Mets" under manager Gil Hodges in 1969. Yost is survived by two daughters--Felita and Alexis--a son, Michael, a sister, and two grandchildren. May he rest in peace.
